IMPACT TELEPSYCHIATRY
GENERATES REVENUE
MEDICARE reimburses for telepsychiatry services the same amount as for in-person psychiatry services. Most non-urban areas are eligible for reimbursement. Click here to see if your site is eligible for Medicare reimbursement for telepsychiatry.
MEDICAID - 48 state Medicaid programs have some form of coverage for telehealth services. PRIVATE PAYORS - 31 states and DC have parity laws which require insurers to pay for services provided via telehealth the same way they pay for services provided in-person. Our providers generate over 6,000 wRVUs per year, which is in the top 10% of all US psychiatrists per MGMA. Our providers create additional revenue through referrals to therapists and PCPs, lab and imaging orders, and prescriptions. Click Here to See Your State's Telehealth Reimbursement Policy SAVES COSTS
![]() Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has been using telehealth since the 1990s, and it estimates average annual savings of $6,500 per patient. "Growing evidence indicates that telehealth lowers health care costs, while improving access and quality of care" - American Hospital Association.
The Geisinger Health Plan study found that implementation of a telemedicine program generated about 11% in cost savings. This led to an estimated return on investment of about $3.30 in cost savings for every $1 spent on program implementation. Telepsychiatry reduces unnecessary admissions, reduces recidivism, improves ED bed turnover, reduces transportation costs, and reduces wait times. The VHA achieved significant reductions in hospitalizations: over 40 percent for mental health patients by using telepsychiatry. IS NECESSARY
The shortage of behavioral health providers is overwhelming local resources and preventing many patients from receiving treatment. More than 60 percent of all counties in the United States, including 80 percent of all rural counties, do not have a single psychiatrist. Many others lack a sufficient number of psychiatrists to treat residents with mental illness. In rural counties just 590 psychiatrists serve more than 27 million Americans. And in the few places where a local psychiatrist is available, the average wait for an appointment is 25 days.
Telepsychiatry is transforming the way mental health care is delivered, and making it accessible to everyone, regardless of location. Our telepsychiatry encounters take place at our partner facilities under the supervision of onsite staff and the remote psychiatrist. IS EFFECTIVE
“Telemedicine in psychiatry, using videoconferencing, is a validated and effective practice of medicine that increases access to care.”- American Psychiatric Association.
Years of clinical research shows that telepsychiatry is an effective means of care. A 2016 systemic review of literature on telepsychiatry concluded that "telepsychiatry performed as well as, if not better than face-to-face delivery of mental health services", and "telepsychiatry is actually more cost-effective in the majority of studies reviewed." Study after study shows that telepsychiatry is effective in treating all major psychiatric disorders, including psychotic disorders, and it works in many different clinical settings. Impact Telepsychiatry has done over 50,000 telepsychiatry visits, and we have a firsthand knowledge of its efficacy. IS THE NEW STANDARD OF CARE
![]() “Telehealth has moved into the mainstream. In 2013, 52 percent of hospitals utilized telehealth, and another 10 percent were beginning the process of implementing telehealth services” - American Hospital Association.
With a nationwide shortage of psychiatrists, telepsychiatry is being used across the nation in ERs, outpatient clinics, inpatient psychiatry units, consultations on medical floors, prisons, and universities. Impact Telepsychiatry has implemented telepsychiatry programs in all of these settings. In a 2014 Foley Telemedicine Survey 90 percent of healthcare executives said their organizations have implemented or are developing a telemedicine program. According to IHS Technology the number of patients using telemedicine will grow from 350,000 users in 2013 to 7 million in 2018. All major health organizations, including American Psychiatric Association, American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, and World Health Organization have endorsed the value and benefits of telemedicine and telepsychiatry. PATIENTS LIKE IT
![]() In a major 2015 patient satisfaction study 95% of the patients said that they were comfortable with telepsychiatry, 84% found the sessions as beneficial as face-to-face, and 99% of the patients reported that they would use the service again. Multiple other studies show that patient satisfaction is similar for telepsychiatry visits compared to face-to-face visits.
Patients enjoy the cost savings, convenience, increased access, continuity of care, and simplicity of telepsychiatry. Impact Telepsychiatry's clinicians are well trained in telepsychiatry etiquette, and are experienced at making patients feel comfortable. |
